A Harmonious Symphony of Faith: LWF General Secretary's Indonesian Visit

Pematangsiantar, Indonesia – In a remarkable display of ecumenical unity, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Anne Burghardt, embarked on a week-long visit to Indonesia from November 21 to 28, 2023. Her journey was marked by inspiring encounters, meaningful collaborations, and a deep sense of spiritual connection.

The visit began with a significant church leaders meeting, where 14 Lutheran churches from across Indonesia gathered to strengthen their bonds and explore the theme of unity in faith. Rev. Dr. Burghardt’s insightful address, coupled with the shared experiences of the church leaders, created a powerful atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual support.

One of the highlights was the ecumenical prayer service held at the Pearaja church of the Protestant Christian Batak Church (HKBP). With over 1,000 attendees, the event showcased the remarkable diversity and unity of the Indonesian Lutheran community. The spirit of togetherness was palpable as the congregation celebrated their shared faith through heartfelt prayers, uplifting songs, and inspiring speeches.

Rev. Dr. Burghardt’s visit also included visits to various Lutheran institutions and projects across Indonesia. She witnessed the impactful diaconal work of the HKBP Hospital in Balige, met with dedicated deaconesses in training, and explored the innovative initiatives of the Lutheran Study Centre. These encounters provided a glimpse into the vital role that Lutheran churches play in serving their communities and promoting social justice.

A significant moment was the public lecture delivered by Rev. Dr. Burghardt at the Theological Seminary of the Protestant Christian Batak Church (HKBP) in Siantar. As Rev. Dr. Burghardt’s visit drew to a close, she visited the four Lutheran churches on the island of Nias, further strengthening her connection with the Indonesian Lutheran community.
