Disaster Training of Trainers Opening Worship Celebrates 506th Church Reformation Day
Medan, Indonesia – October 31, 2023 – In a poignant ceremony in Medan, Indonesia, the Disaster Training of Trainers was inaugurated, led by Ephorus HKI Rev. Firman Sibarani and Rev. Esra Lumbantobing from GKPI. The event, marking the 506th Church Reformation Day, served as a reminder to participants of their duty to fortify their communities, particularly in times of crises.
The opening worship, symbolized by a holy communion, underlined unity and the shared dedication of participants to disaster readiness and response. Spiritual leaders emphasized the church’s role in supporting communities during disasters. This TOT Workshop, a collaboration between ELCA and KNLWF, aims to train 36 participants, including church representatives and key staff, with disaster response training. It will be led by professionals like Rev. Franklin Ishida, Rev. Chandran Martin, Mr. Roy Subahsis from ELCA, and Tiurma Pohan (CDRM Indonesia). Scheduled from 1-5 November, the workshop seeks to ensure sustained disaster preparedness in participating churches.
The objectives are explicit: training participants as proficient disaster trainers, ensuring continuity in disaster response mechanisms, establishing networks for initiating church disaster programs, and fostering a collaborative environment for best practice sharing. Topics will cover risk assessment, emergency planning, communication, community engagement, and practical exercises. The local team, led by KNLWF Director, has arranged the venue in Medan for a conducive learning atmosphere, equipped with necessary materials.
