Disaster Training of Trainers (Day IV)

Medan, November 3, 2023 – The Disaster Training of Trainers (TOT) program’s fourth day honed participants’ skills in disaster response. This day revolved around crucial topics like Basics of Food Security, WASH, Shelter, Health Care, Adult Learning Techniques, and the role of a Trainer/Facilitator/Coach, bolstering their understanding of disaster management fundamentals. The day initiated with a detailed examination of food security in disasters, covering emergency food distribution, nutritional needs, and assessing food availability to ensure affected communities have access to safe and adequate food supplies.

Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene practices were focused as vital in disaster zones. Participants learned about water purification, waste management, and hygiene promotion to maintain community health amidst crisis. The program mentioned shelter concerns in disaster-prone regions, educating participants on shelter management, construction techniques, and safety assessments, enabling them to assist communities in securing suitable shelter. Insights into health care in disaster situations included setting up mobile clinics and emergency medical care, vital for addressing survivors’ immediate health needs.

A significant training segment focused on adult learning methods, introducing approaches for engaging adult learners effectively. This is crucial for future trainers, understanding learners’ distinct needs and preferences. The roles and duties of a trainer, facilitator, and coach were explored. Understanding the skills necessary to lead response teams is crucial for future trainers in disaster preparedness efforts. Participants practiced for “Participant Led Sessions (PLS)” to apply their knowledge and skills in leading training sessions themselves. This practical exercise marks a critical step in their development as effective trainers and facilitators.

The program continues for one more day, providing specialized training in disaster response. We anticipate these individuals’ transformation into adept trainers, facilitators, and coaches.
