Southeast Asia Diaconal Workshop 2023 (Day II)
Parapat, October 24, 2023 – The Southeast Asia Diaconal Workshop 2023 day II began with Prof. J.B. Giyana Banawiratma that led a dynamic session at the 2023 Southeast Asia Diaconal Workshop, challenging churches to embrace a radical form of diaconia. Navigating Asia’s complex landscape of poverty, religious diversity, and colonial legacies, participants delved into the biblical foundations for social justice. By examining Jesus’ ministry and the early Church, the workshop emphasized the imperative of addressing systemic oppression and poverty. Attendees were equipped with theological tools and practical insights to transform their congregations into agents of change in Southeast Asia.
Deacon Eleven Sihotang ignited the third session in a dynamic discussion on “Diakonia: Carrying Out God’s Mission through Ways of Worship” at the Southeast Asia Diaconal Workshop 2023. Inspired by 2 Corinthians 8:1-15, the session underscored the church’s role as a catalyst for positive change. Diakonia emerged as the cornerstone, with participants exploring how faith is manifested through tangible service. By emphasizing compassion and courage, the session encouraged practical applications of Diakonia, from pastoral care to youth ministry. Ultimately, the workshop aimed to equip attendees to embody God’s mission through acts of love and service within their communities.
Rev. Obertina M. Johanis ignited the next session a powerful discussion on gender justice and church inclusion at the Southeast Asia Diaconal Workshop. She exposed the pervasive issue of gender-based violence (GBV) within church communities, emphasizing the church’s crucial role in prevention and support. By highlighting programs like “The Network” and CCA’s initiatives, she underscored practical steps towards addressing GBV. With a theological foundation rooted in Ezekiel, Rev. Johanis called for a diaconal response, advocating for awareness, education, and challenging harmful gender norms. The session ultimately emphasized the church’s responsibility to create a safe and inclusive space for all, especially female pastors.
The Southeast Asia Diaconal Workshop explored the church’s role as a prophetic voice for justice. The fifth session by Mr. Ramanathan Manickavasagan challenged attendees to define “church” and “voice,” emphasizing the church’s historical power to influence society. The session delved into the biblical concept of “prophetic” advocacy, sparking lively debate and inspiring attendees to become agents of change in their communities.
The 2023 Diaconal Workshop culminated its second day with a vibrant Taizé prayer and Cultural Evening. This meditative worship style, originating from France, fosters peace and unity through simple songs and communal reflection. The evening celebrated diversity with prayers in multiple languages, accompanied by music and Eastern Orthodox elements. This shared spiritual experience was a powerful reminder of unity and hope.
As for Cultural Evening, participants from diverse backgrounds, including Mentawai, Malaysia, Cambodia, Nias, Angkola, Simalungun, and Toba, showcased their rich heritage through song, dance, and storytelling. The evening was further enriched by a captivating performance from Inggou Victory, highlighting various Batak traditions. From the opening notes of “Pulo Samosir” to the energetic Nias finale, the event was a cultural tapestry that left everyone inspired and uplifted.
